Is Twitter Worth Your Attention?

Twitter is a social networking and micro-blogging service. Twitter enables its users to send and read other users’ updates. These are referred to as tweets.

Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length. Updates are displayed on the user’s profile page and delivered to other users who have signed up to receive them.

As the default a Tweet is delivered to everyone. You, as a sender can also restrict delivery to those in your particular inner circle of friends and colleagues.  Users can send and receive updates via the Twitter website, SMS, RSS (receive only), or through applications such as Tweetie, HootSuite, Twhirl, and TweetDeck.  The service is free to use over the web, but using SMS may incur phone services provider fees.

Some of the notable marketing benefits would be:

  • A greater range of people to talk to.
  • Increases traffic to your blog because of the links from Twitter.
  • Like most social media marketing, Twitter provides more of a drip feed than a flood, but it remains consistent and grows steadily.
  • Twitter doesn’t really take up very much time. Of all the networks it’s the easiest to maintain as it takes seconds to do what you need to do and even with all the replies, adding followers, etc.
  • Twitter provides one of the most instant responses.
  • Twitter can be used a good tracking application.
  • Twitter can be a solid communication medium during a live conference event.
  • Twitter can be a RSS feed reader to help you gather research.
  • Twitter can provide timely and unique news updates and information on a global scale.

As with any online marketing or social networking tool, how well you understand its function and how you may be able to take advantage of that function, will be up to you. I highly recommend you learn all you can about Twitter and decide if this unique Web 2.0 global networking application is right for you.
