What is "success"? Why does it seem everyone wants
"success"? What does "success" mean to you? Do you need
"success"? Do you deserve "success"?
That's this week's focus!
Success. Where does it begin and what is it really?
According to Roget's International Thesaurus...
Success is...
* Accomplishment
* Prosperity
* Superiority
* Victory
When one examines the term "success" in this fashion, one
can begin to see that "success" can be a fairly tall order.
I mean success in most cases (our lives of simple
normality), we were not simply born of it. Success must be
achieved. Accomplishment must be attained. Prosperity must
be built. Superiority must be earned. Victory must be won.
I am regularly blown away when I witness so many
well-intentioned people try their hand at landing success
right here on the NET; only to stumble and bumble through
the massive quantities of gibberish found upon the browsers
of millions of desktops and notebooks across the globe.
As I answer my hundreds of emails every week, I preach the
same message time and again.
My sermon goes something like this...
Unless you have boat-loads of money to burn, you must build
your structure one brick at a time. Time is the key.
Today's marketer consists of two separate categories...
Category #1
If you possess pockets deeper than the Grand Canyon itself,
Then...
You can easily and quite swiftly generate instant awareness
about your product or service.
Category #2
If you are like most people and fit snugly into the upper
90% that must work to make a living,
Then...
You must first begin to practice the following disciplines
to make the most of your initial eBusiness efforts:
1. Learn About Yourself...
What makes you tick? What turns you on? What turns you
off? And, most importantly, what are you most passionate
about?
2. Rely On Patience...
Remind yourself again and again that your new eBusiness
adventure will take a certain amount of time to build.
Anything worthy of wearing the ribbon of success did not
just happened overnight.
3. Take "Baby Steps"...
Don't let the mystical world of "Smoke and Mirrors" send you
into instant hyperventilation. Savor your eBusiness
delicacy one bite at a time. Don't race from here to there
with arrival of every new email opportunity. Work one
eBusiness venture at a time.
4. Align Yourself With Successful People...
Remember, "Success breeds success"! If the person or
company you are currently following is racing Mach 10 with
their hair on fire exuding that "Deer-in-the-headlights"
look, run quickly and furiously in any other direction than
the one in which they are going. Hang with those that have
proven their success and are more than willing to take you
under their wing.
5. Have A Clue...
If you fail to plan than you plan to fail. Whether on a
napkin or square sheet of toilet paper, write down your game
plan. Always assume that if you do not write it down, you
will forget. How can you sell your product or service if
you yourself don't know what you're talking about. View
your memoirs as a form of a contract to yourself.

A Good Title Is A Work Of Genius

That's what Emanuel Haldeman-Julius said about changing the
title of a book to increase sales. And he should know, he's
the guy who single-handedly sold more than 100,000,000
"little blue books" during the first part of the 20th
century (Yes, I said 100 million copies).
His book entitled "The First Hundred Million" gives a rare
glimpse into how to use certain tested title words to
increase your sales. In fact, his book is one of the most
scientific studies of what a title change can do for your
sales.
The most remarkable thing is that Haldeman-Julius simply
advertised his books by title alone. There was no selling
copy, only the title of the book. That's it.
So before you decide on any haphazard title for your next
ebook, manual, ezine article or free report, you might want
to take advice from this savvy marketer.
Haldeman-Julius had a policy in his business - if a title
didn't sell over 10,000 copies a year it was sent to a
place in his office called "The Hospital". Inside the
Hospital he went to work coming up with a new title for the
poorly selling book and re-releasing it. If the revised
title didn't sell, the book went into the 'morgue".
He tells about a book originally being titled "The Art of
Controversy" which never really sold until it was changed to
"How to Argue Logically" and then it leapt up to 30,000
copies. The amazing thing is that nothing else was changed
inside the book, just the title.
And from this "in the trenches" research, Haldeman-Julius
discovered certain title words that could increase the sales
of almost any book when applied. For instance the words
"The Truth About" increased sales for one book starting its
publishing life as "Patent Medicine". This book by Dr.
Arthur Cramp only sold 3,000 copies in 1925 but when the
title was changed to "The Truth About Patent Medicine" it
rose up to a respectable 10,000 copies.
Therefore the words "The Truth About" are magical. Next, he
found the words "Life" and "Love" to work well. Followed by
the worn, but still very powerful phrase "How To". Books
with "How To" in the title were almost always placed at the
top of his sales list. Take for example, the title "How to
Psycho-Analyze Yourself" sold 43,000 copies while a similar
title "Psycho-Analysis Explained" sold 5,000 less copies.
And the title "How I Psycho-Analyzed Myself" managed to
attract only 13,500 buyers.
What's more, Haldeman-Julius discovered the public was (and
still is) clamoring for facts. So the words "The Facts You
Should Know" proved a big winner.
So how can you apply this information?
Easy! The way you should use this wisdom from the ages is by
applying it to titles, ebooks, ezine articles, free reports
and your headlines. For instance, if I was a cosmetic
surgeon I'd give out free ebooks like this: "The Facts You
Should Know About Liposuction" or "The Truth About Laser
Hair Removal" or "How To Erase The Years With Laser
Resurfacing". Each of these could almost be a headline by
themselves. That's what you want to strive for because
that's what people want!

Let's face it, your email box is flooding over with oodles
of email. Some of it makes you wonder where on God's green
earth did this crap come from right?

to distinguish between unsolicited email and those you
requested to receive. But what about these ezines and
newsletters you're receiving? Do you consider them garbage?

Before you delete, please read!
You see, many ezine Publishers have already been down the
road you're travelling. They have made the same mistakes
and have overcome most obstacles cluttering the Internet
highway. Most of these Publishers have something to tell
you, but, how many of you are actually listening?
In addition to providing the resources, e-courses,
tutorials, and literature to help you achieve success
through Internet marketing, a good Publisher will provide
you with support.
Don't be afraid to contact a Publisher with your questions
or comments. In fact, most rely on your input and value
your feedback. Interact with your Publisher and you'll be
pleasantly surprised to find a real human behind that issue!
Whether you subscribed through a recommendation, a website
you visited, or through Ezine Co-Ops, you're bound to find
some ezines are worth reading from start to finish. There's
a wealth of information, and many hidden strategies, free
downloads, and links to resources you may not have known
exist.
A lot of time and research goes in to many of these
publications, so, use caution before pressing the delete
key. You may be missing something you've been looking for!

My Confession, Honest!

After being laid off 2 years ago, I decided to give online
marketing my full time attention.
It has been THE most frustrating, tiring and exhilarating
time of my life! Working 6 days a week, many days 10-14
hours was the norm. If you don't think it takes this
committment, I have some land in the Everglades I'd like
you to look at...o)
Unfortunately, my wife of 38 years didn't always appreciate
my being at the 'office' over half of the 24 hour day! But
she is a wonderful person with much patience and sometimes
even understanding
)
One of the worst aspects of this home business experience is
that your family and friends don't understand what you do
and think that you are either doing something...
a. Illegal
b. Immoral
c. Unethical
d. A total waste of time
e. All of the above.
A cousin said to me recently, "you know, I have no idea what
you are doing'". I tried to explain that I have an
Internet business that mainly sells digital information
products but I'm afraid his blank look meant he still had no
clue. Oh well, that's life.
If you are in this net marketing game, my advice is to not
spend all day and part of the night in the home office. Take
many breaks for exercise, talking with your spouse, kids and
maybe even take Sunday off like I do. That's part of God's
commandment anyway
)
I have neglected exercise and eating properly for many
months and as a result, developed blood clots in my leg and
lung that almost killed me! I have always been an active
person, playing tennis 3-4 times/week but there never seemed
to be time to exercise, eat or talk with family or friends.
BIG mistake. Don't you make it!
There is nothing like the 5 second commute, reading your
email to see how many new orders came in while you are
sleeping and creating a new advertising campaign. The
downside is the strain on yourself, your family and
friendships. There just never seems to be enough time for
them! But make a vow today to stop and smell the roses and
spend some quality and quantity time with those you care
most about. Life is really VERY short.

Is Your Self-Confidence Tied To Your Past Accomplishments?

Do you ever find that your level of self confidence tends to
go up and down like the stock market? Or perhaps it even
goes up and down along with the stock market! Here is a
story about a Japanese businessman that might give you a new
perspective.
I recently heard from a friend, about a Japanese business
man that has created a highly successful business with
hundreds of stores throughout the country. At first I
thought my friend was going to be telling me about the "how
to" of business success, but instead the story took quite a
different path than I was expecting. What follows is my
version of an inspiring story.
The man in my story had actually failed at numerous
businesses over the years. He started out with a large and
successful family business, but he ran that business into
the ground and eventually went bankrupt. After his
bankruptcy he said, "Even though my business had failed, I
did not feel like I had failed. I still had confidence in
myself.
I still knew that I could do something good. I didn't try to
figure out all the details of what I had done right or
wrong, I didn't try to understand whether I was a good
business man or a bad business man. I just continued to
believe in myself, and the vision that I had."
After his bankruptcy he searched around and managed to
borrow some money for a new business. In a reasonably short
amount of time he ran this business into bankruptcy as well.
Afterwards he said, "Even more so now, I still had
confidence in myself. I had seen some flashes of brilliance,
and I knew that I could do something good. Once again, I
didn't try to figure out right or wrong, good or bad, I only
concentrated on how I could borrow more money and start all
over again."
So, he manages to borrow some more money, and starts another
business, and of course this business also goes bankrupt, or
I wouldn't be telling this story! After his third bankruptcy
he said "I knew I was getting closer to getting it right."
What a fantastic spirit this guy has! He has huge confidence
in the face of big time short term failure.
Back out on the streets he went, and this time he only
managed to borrow a rather small sum of money. Not being
able to start a "real" business with such a limited amount
of cash, he rented a small Japanese pick-up truck. (The
small ones are REALLY small. Sort of like a bonsai version
of an American pick-up truck).
With little money to spend he shopped around in various
wholesale markets and wound up deciding to only buy things
that he could sell cheaply with no seeming connection to the
various products, except that they were inexpensive and of
reasonable quality. He loaded his goods into the back of
his tiny pick-up truck and parked illegally on a busy street
where he hawked his wares to the passersby, and the launch
of a new retail phenomena had begun.
Over time he parleyed the success he had with his one tiny
truck, into a chain of highly successful stores.
When asked to what he attributed his success, he replied
"Believing in myself, and not picking apart all of my pluses
and minuses." He said, "Right from the beginning I knew that
I could be successful. When I failed the first time I
suddenly had a lot of free time on my hands since I no
longer had a business to run.
I figured that I basically had two choices in regard to what
to do with my time:
1. Do a lot of thinking about what went wrong and try to
correct my many mistakes in the future. Or:
2. Take the time to relax and gain a new perspective on
life. I of course chose the latter. From a relaxed state I
was able to understand things that I was not able to
understand when I was running around trying to be
successful. I knew that dissecting what I had done right
and wrong would eat up a lot of time and energy, and most
likely not give me the formula for success. I knew that the
formula for success was already inside of me, and that my
job was to find a way to allow this formula to be expressed.
I didn't try to understand what to do, I tried to get myself
to the point where I was already doing what I needed to do."
To me this story offers a great deal of inspiration.
Continuing to believe in myself regardless of the challenges
to be faced, is a gift that I have often struggled to give
myself. It is wonderful to be presented with such a fine
example to learn from. The faith this man has in himself can
be a gift to all of us. And at the same time I can't help
but chuckle when thinking what a business consultant might
say about this man's method for conducting business.
This story also reminds me of an article I read in a
business magazine a number of years ago. The story told of
the careers of a number of highly successful business
people, all of whom had "failed" at least three or four
times along the way. Each person in their own words said the
following "I could not be the success I am today, had it not
been for all of my previous failures!"
