True Hope and Freedom for All God’s People

Let us examine an overview of the book of the Minor Prophet, Zechariah. This Old Testament portion of the Word of God (written  by Zechariah) encompasses God’s jealousy, rebuilding the Temple, the coming King (the Messiah, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ), and God’s protection.

The Book of Zechariah was written during the period of about 520  to 480 B.C. (Chapter 1-8 were written about 520-518 B.C. Chapters 9-14 were written around 480 B.C.) to give hope to God’s people by revealing God’s future deliverance through the Messiah (Jesus Christ).

The Book of Zechariah was originally written to the Jews in Jerusalem who had returned from their captivity and to God’s people everywhere.

The Book of Zechariah is the most apocalyptic and messianic of all the Minor Prophets. The key people found in the Book of Zechariah are Zerubbabel and Joshua.

“It is not be force nor by strength, but my Spirit, says the LORD of Heaven’s Armies.” Zechariah 4:6

God’s Jealousy

Disobedience was the root of Judah’s problems. God was jealous (“zealous”) for His people’s devotion. Likewise, God wants our complete loyalty.

Rebuilding the Temple

The Jews were home from exile, but the Temple was not yet rebuilt. Zechariah encouraged them to move forward towards its re-construction. God would both protect His workmen and also empower them by His Holy Spirit to complete the rebuilding. God will empower us to do whatever we’re assigned to do, too!

The Coming King

Zechariah prophesied that the Messiah would come someday to rescue people from sin  and to reign as King. Jesus already has fulfilled the first part of the prophecy. Someday, He will return to earth as a victorious King to usher in peace throughout the world.

God’s Protection

Zechariah prophesied future times of trouble. But God would protect His people. God cares deeply for His people and will deliver them from all who oppress them.

As with any book of God’s Holy Word, I would encourage you to press into  (read and pray upon) the Book of Zechariah. Let God’s Word guide your steps as your grow as a Christian Disciple, and bring you peace and joy all the days of your life.

May almighty God bless you abundantly,

Tony
