Let us examine an overview of the collection of songs expressing praise, thanksgiving, and confession to God which is depicted authentically in Book of Psalms. This poetical Old Testament portion of the Word of God (written primarily by David) encompasses praise, God’s power, forgiveness, gratitude, and trust.

The Book of Psalms was written primarily by David between the time of Moses (around 1440 B.C.) and the Babylonian captivity (586 B.C.). For the most part, the psalms were not intended to be narrations of historical events. However, they often parallel events in history, such as David’s flight from Saul (Psalm 18) and his sin with Bathsheba (Psalm 51). Although Psalms has a unified plan, each psalm can be read and understood alone. Psalms is probably the most widely read book of the Bible, because it is easy to relate to the writer’s emotions.

Authorship: David wrote 73 psalms; Asaph wrote 12; the descendants of Korah wrote 10; Solomon wrote 2, Heman (with the descendants of Korah), Ethan, and Moses each wrote 1. Although 51 psalms are anonymous, the New Testament ascribes two of the anonymous psalms–Psalm 2 and 95–to David. (See Acts 4:25; Hebrews 4:7).

…you spoke long ago by the Holy Spirit through our ancestor David, your servant, saying, “Why were the nations so angry? Why did they waste their time with futile plans?” Acts 4:25

So God set another time for entering his rest, and that time is today. God announced this through David much later in the words already quoted: “Today when you hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts.” Hebrews 4:7

Key Place: God’s holy Temple.

Praise

Psalms are songs of praise to God as our Creator, Savior, and provider. Reading Psalms can encourage us to praise Him.

God’s Power

God is all-powerful, and always in control (sovereign) of every situation. Believing in God’s power can overcome the despair of any pain or trial.

Forgiveness

Many psalms are intense prayers asking God for forgiveness. Because God forgives us, we can pray to Him honestly and directly. When we receive God’s forgiveness, we move from being separated from Him to being close to Him, from feeling guilty to feeling loved.

Gratitude

God protects, guides, forgives, and provides everything we need. When we realize how much we benefit from knowing God, we can fully express our thanks to Him.

Trust

God’s faithfulness and justice has been proven throughout history. Knowing Him intimately drives away doubt, fear, and loneliness.

Reasons to Read Psalms

God’s Word was written to be studied, understood, and applied, and the Book of Psalms lends itself most directly to application. We may turn to Psalms looking for something, but sooner or later we will meet Someone. As we read and memorize Psalms, we will discover how much they are already part of us. They put our deepest hurts, longings, thoughts, and prayers into words. They gently push us toward being what God designed us to be–people who love and live for Him.

To find comfort: Psalm 23

To learn a new prayer: Psalm 136

To understand yourself more clearly: Psalm 8

To be forgiven for your sins: Psalm 51

To meet God intimately: Psalm 103

To learn a new song: Psalm 92

To know how to come to God each day: Psalm 5

To feel worthwhile: Psalm 139

To understand why you should read the Bible: Psalm 119

To know that God is in control: Psalm 146

To give thanks to God: Psalm 136

To know why you should worship God: Psalm 104

To give praise to God: Psalm 145

To please God: Psalm 15

May almighty God richly bless you,

Let us examine an overview of the book of the Major Prophet, Jeremiah (who is also referred to as the “Crying Prophet”). This Old Testament portion of the Word of God (written by Jeremiah) encompasses sin, punishment, faithful to fulfill, hope, and faithful service.

The Book of Jeremiah was written during Jeremiah’s ministry, approximately 627-586 B.C. to urge God’s people to turn from their sins and to turn back to God. It was originally written to Judah (the southern kingdom) and its capital Jerusalem. The Book of Jeremiah is a combination of history, poetry, and biography. Jeremiah often used symbolism to communicate his messages. The key people found in the Book of Jeremiah are Judah’s kings Josiah, Jehoahaz, Jehoiakim, Jehoiachin (Coniah), and Zedekiah. The nation was conquered by Babylon in 586 B.C. (Read 2 Kings 21-25). Zephaniah preceded Jeremiah; Habakkuk was his contemporary.

Key Places: Anathoth, Jerusalem, ramah, and Egypt.

Sin

Judah’s deterioration and disaster stemmed from their disobedience to God. When we refuse to listen to God’s warnings and go our own way, we invite disaster.

“You will see what an evil, bitter thing it is to abandon the LORD your God and not fear him.” Jeremiah 2:19

Punishment

The people of Judah had only themselves to blame for their suffering. Likewise, we must answer to God for how we live.

Faithful to Fulfill

God brought the prophecies of Micah, Isaiah, and Zephaniah to pass according to his timetable. God is faithful to fulfill His promises.

Hope

Jeremiah predicted that after the nation’s destruction, God would send the Messiah who would lead them into a new future, a new covenant, and a new day of hope. God still renews hope with the promise of eternal life.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” says the LORD. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11

Faithful Service

Jeremiah served God faithfully for over 40 years. The people ignored, rejected, and persecuted him, yet he did not fail. People’s acceptance or rejection of us is not the measure of our success. God’s approval is our standard for service.

May our almighty Father of the Universe bless us always,

Let us examine an overview of the book of the Minor Prophet, Zechariah. This Old Testament portion of the Word of God (written by Zechariah) encompasses God’s jealousy, rebuilding the Temple, the coming King (the Messiah, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ), and God’s protection.

The Book of Zechariah was written during the period of about 520 to 480 B.C. (Chapter 1-8 were written about 520-518 B.C. Chapters 9-14 were written around 480 B.C.) to give hope to God’s people by revealing God’s future deliverance through the Messiah (Jesus Christ).

The Book of Zechariah was originally written to the Jews in Jerusalem who had returned from their captivity and to God’s people everywhere.

The Book of Zechariah is the most apocalyptic and messianic of all the Minor Prophets. The key people found in the Book of Zechariah are Zerubbabel and Joshua.

“It is not be force nor by strength, but my Spirit, says the LORD of Heaven’s Armies.” Zechariah 4:6

God’s Jealousy

Disobedience was the root of Judah’s problems. God was jealous (“zealous”) for His people’s devotion. Likewise, God wants our complete loyalty.

Rebuilding the Temple

The Jews were home from exile, but the Temple was not yet rebuilt. Zechariah encouraged them to move forward towards its re-construction. God would both protect His workmen and also empower them by His Holy Spirit to complete the rebuilding. God will empower us to do whatever we’re assigned to do, too!

The Coming King

Zechariah prophesied that the Messiah would come someday to rescue people from sin and to reign as King. Jesus already has fulfilled the first part of the prophecy. Someday, He will return to earth as a victorious King to usher in peace throughout the world.

God’s Protection

Zechariah prophesied future times of trouble. But God would protect His people. God cares deeply for His people and will deliver them from all who oppress them.

As with any book of God’s Holy Word, I would encourage you to press into (read and pray upon) the Book of Zechariah. Let God’s Word guide your steps as your grow as a Christian Disciple, and bring you peace and joy all the days of your life.

May almighty God bless you abundantly,

The book of Judges covers approximately 300 years from the death of Joshua until the rise of the monarchy in Israel. During this tumultuous time several leaders, judges, are raised up to govern the people. Some of these men and women are heroic in their efforts while others rule over a people straying far from God.

The two best known characters in the book are Gideon (6:1-8:35) and Samson. Samson and his affair with Delilah is the best known story (16:1-16:31).

I. Israel following the death of Joshua, 1:1-3:6
II. Israel under the judges, 3:7-16:31
III. The failings during the period of the judges, 17:1-21:25

The date of writing could be as early as 1400 B.C., or as late as 1200 B.C. In this book the Israelites cross the Jordan into the land of Canaan with Joshua now the heir to Moses’ leadership. There are two distinct parts to the book, the first describes the conquest of Canaan, the second gives explicit details of the dividing of the land among the tribes.

Probably the most recognized scriptures in the book are those describing the story of Joshua and the Israelites’ conquest of the city of Jericho (6:1-6:27).

I. Entering the land of Canaan and conquering it, 1:1-12:24
II. Dividing the land, 13:1-21:45
III. Joshua’s farewell, 22:1-24:33

In Deuteronomy the Israelites prepare to enter Canaan and Moses is near death. It describes the wanderings of the people in the Sinai, their trials and tribulations, their victories, and their heritage. The Ten Commandments are repeated in chapters 4 and 5 followed by other commands and laws to the people. Joshua is selected as the successor to Moses and is the one to lead the people into Canaan. In chapters 32 and 33, Moses speaks to the people for the last time, recounts their journey, and offers his final blessings to the multitudes.

I. Review of Israelites’ journey from Egypt, 1:1-4:43
II. The laws of God reviewed, 4:44-26:19
III. The covenant of God ratified, 27:1-30:20
IV. Moses and his final days, 31:1-34:12

Numbers takes its name from the census of the Israelites described in the first four chapters. The census, however, is not the focal point of the book. The Israelites have left Egypt and now face an uncertain future as they journey toward the Promised Land of Canaan. They face hardships in the deserts of Sinai, their faltering faith, and a host of enemies. Their only hope in obtaining the land of Canaan rests in their faith in God.

I. The Israelites in the Sinai, 1:1-4:49
II. More laws of God for the people, 5:1-10:10
III. Toward the plains of Israel, 10:11-33:49
IV. Entering the land of Canaan, 33:50-36:13

It was written between 1446 and 1406 B.C. Genesis takes its name from the Greek word meaning “origin” or “beginning.” The book starts with the creation of the universe and the creation of man and woman. It describes the fall of man and woman into sin, and establishes God as the one true sovereign over all His creation. Genesis includes the accounts of Noah and the flood, the origin of the nations, the establishment of the Israelites as God’s “chosen” people, and the accounts of the lives of such people as Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph.

As Christians we often wonder if God truly hears our prayers. We ask our heavenly Father for many things. Are there occasions when God cannot hear our call? If yes, how is this so? How frightening to think that as His child, He may be forced to actually turn away. The answer is “yes”, and it is by our own doing. Let us now examine why this happens and how we can make it right again with God as we make our way through the Book of Jeremiah.

Jeremiah was a major prophet of the Old Testament Canon, and author of the Book of Jeremiah. His message was to urge God’s people to turn from their sins and to turn back to God. Although written during Jeremiah’s ministry between 627-586 B.C., his message was written to Judah (the southern kingdom) and its capital city, Jerusalem; his message is very much alive today!

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8).

In Jeremiah 14:11-12, we find Israel had stretched God’s patience. Their false repentance and empty rituals had continued long enough, and so God turned deaf ears to their cries. For a third time, God told Jeremiah not to pray for the people. Why should people pray to God, when He was less important to them than handsome idols made of wood or stone? Why not let the idols answer their prayers? If you are putting something ahead of God when all is going well, will you be content to trust in this false god when you are in trouble?

Then the LORD said to me, “Do not pray for the well-being of this people. Although they fast, I will not listen to their cry; though they offer burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them. Instead, I will destroy them with the sword, famine and plague” (Jeremiah 14:11-12).

You see, God is same now as He was 627-586 B.C., and His same principles apply to our lives right here and now. This is not to say that we should live in a dark box with eyes closed, but we are to place God first before “all things”; before American Idol, before Facebook, before that Disney vacation, before “all things.” As God’s Holy Bible clearly states, we are to seek God first.

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (Matthew 6:33).

Brothers and sisters in the Lord God, we can get right again with our heavenly Father. We must be strong enough to shake this life’s tantalizing dead ends. We must look through the eye’s of the child that lives within us and look to our Father God first in “all” things. We must drop to our knees and bow our heads in complete submission to His grace and mercy. We must finally realize that although this world has many amazing wonders, the wonderment of God almighty trumps them all. Believe that, and become it. God “will” once again hear your prayers!

May almighty God bless you abundantly,

The first five prophetical books (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, and Daniel) focus on the major prophets, and the final 12 prophetical books ( Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi) address the minor prophets.

The major prophets wrote from the eighth to the sixth centuries before Christ, as nations were rising and falling around Israel, and idolatry and injustice were endemic in Israel. The major prophets teach us that God has a plan for history and that through the coming Messiah He will eventually subdue all His enemies under His feet and bring peace to the Earth. The major prophets also vividly teach us that God is deeply concerned with moral integrity and justice in our daily lives.

The age-long Hebrew and Christian position is that Moses, guided by the Spirit of God, wrote Genesis. The book closes approximately three hundred years before Moses was born. Moses could have received his information only by direct revelation from God or from historical records to which he has access that had been handed down from his forefathers.

We can read what Jesus said about Moses in Luke and John.

“And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.” (Luke 24:27)

“Has not Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?” (John 7:19)

Every year there are being dug up in Egypt and Israel evidences of writing in Moses’ day and of the historical truth of what is recorded in the Pentateuch. Moses was educated in the palace of Pharaoh and “was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians” (Acts 7:22), which included the literary profession. Moses did make use of writing (Exodus 34:27; Numbers 17:2; Deuteronomy 6:9; 24:1, 3; Joshua 8:32).

No doubt the creation story was written long before, maybe by Abraham or Noah, or Enoch, the grandson of Adam (Genesis 4:17). Who knows? Writing was in common use before the days of Abraham. In Ur, as in every important city in Babylonia, the libraries contained thousands of books, dictionaries, grammars, reference works, encyclopedias, and works on mathematics, astronomy, geography, religion, and politics. No doubt Abraham had received traditions or records from Shem, the son of Noah (Genesis 6:10), about the story of Creation, the Fall of humanity, and of the flood. Abraham lived in a society of culture, books, and libraries. He no doubt made careful and accurate copies of all that happened to him and of the promises God had made to him. He put it down on clay tablets in the cuneiform writing (the alphabet of the Babylonians) to be handed down in the annals of the nation he was founding.

Blessings and joy in Christ Jesus,
